With loggerhead turtles being vulnerable to atmospheric and oceanographic shifts associated with climate change, they have been under the close watch of Turkish authorities as their seasonal marine habitat may shift in response to global warming.

The world-famous beaches of Antalya, the home of endangered caretta carettas, fell silent this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. As the weather gets warmer, the sea turtles are expected to go to the beach to lay eggs in adult nesting areas later this month.

Some 115,000 baby caretta caretta (loggerhead) sea turtles made it to the sea in Turkey this summer, according to a report released by the Environment Ministry.

Some 1,400 baby turtles have reached the sea this year so far at the Çıralı beach, which is an important nesting area for the endangered caretta caretta species.

Two loggerhead sea turtles, an endangered species also known as Caretta Caretta, have been injured so far this summer after being hit by boats in Laganas Bay on the southern coast of the Ionian island of Zakynthos, activists say.

About 70,000 endangered sea turtle hatchlings are expected to crawl into the sea from Turkey's southern coast this summer. 

Fifty nests of endangered loggerhead sea turtles, also known as caretta caretta, have been destroyed by construction equipment in the district of Serik in the Mediterranean province of Antalya.

Endangered caretta caretta sea turtles have started laying eggs early this year.
