Taiwan: At least one dead and 205 injured by powerful typhoon Kong-rai

The powerful Typhoon Kong-rai, one of the most severe to hit Taiwan in recent years, made landfall at noon in Chongqing (southeast) and has already caused the death of at least one person, while at least 205 people were injured, according to a new report from authorities.

Thousands of people were stranded on rooftops and posted desperate pleas for help on social media Tuesday after severe flooding in parts of typhoon-hit Vietnam, as the death toll climbed to 82.

‘Climate change fueled’ deadly Typhoon Gaemi

Climate change turbocharged the winds and rain of Typhoon Gaemi, which killed dozens of people across the Philippines, Taiwan and China earlier this year, a group of scientists said on Thursday.

Gaemi skirted the Philippines in July, triggering floods and landslides that killed at least 40 people, before making landfall in Taiwan and China.

Extreme downpours in Hatay cause floods, damage fields

Torrential rains have wreaked havoc in the country's southeastern region as the Asi River bursts its banks in the province of Hatay, causing floods and damaging agricultural fields.

The intense rain in the evening hours of Jan. 16 led the Asi River to overflow, leaving many agricultural lands, especially in Hatay's Antakya district, flooded.
