About 730,000 Ukrainians have left the country for Russia this year due to the fighting in eastern Ukraine, the European head of the United Nations agency for refugees said on Aug. 5, pointing to a far bigger exodus than previously thought.
   

More than 400 Ukrainian soldiers "flee to to Russia"

MOSCOW -- Ukrainian authorities' orders to troops to fight their own people are "impossible," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has told Itar-Tass on Monday.

His comments came as 438 Ukrainian military personnel reportedly fled across the border into Russia overnight.

Serbian trucks "drive through" Ukrainian blockade

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has sent a protest note to the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry over discriminatory treatment at a summer camp for children at a Black Sea resort.

According to the Ukrainian authorities, Igor Abesinov, head of a group of animators at the “Mistral” summer camp for children at the resort of Sveti Vlas, banned the wearing of Ukrainian national symbols.

Pro-Russian rebels in the east of Ukraine reportedly shot down two fighter jets of Kiev's military forces, agencies from the country said.

According to the press service of the so-called "anti-terrorist" operation's headquarters, two Su-25 aircraft were shot near the Savur-Mogila memorial, in the Shakhtarsk region near Russia's border.

Pro-Russian rebels shot down two Ukrainian fighter jets on July 23, not far from where a Malaysian airliner was brought down last week in eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 passengers on board.

Five civilians die as Ukrainian forces shell town

LUGANSK -- Five civilians were killed and 16 others wounded in the last 24 hours in the clashes in Lugansk, in southeastern Ukraine.

Infrastructure facilities and 22 homes have been damaged, according to the press service of the city assembly of Lugansk.

More accusations, still no investigation

MOSCOW -- The Russian military has said that a Ukrainian SU-25 warplane was flying in the vicinity of a Malaysia Airlines aircraft shortly before it crashed in Ukraine.

The Russian Defense Ministry claims that "Kiev must explain why a military plane was following a passenger flight."
