The United States announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, a rebuke of China's human rights record that stops short of preventing U.S. athletes from competing.

China foisted sanctions on British lawmakers and lobby groups on March 25, widening a chasm between Beijing and Western powers critical of alleged rights violations in Xinjiang.

The EU, U.K., Canada and U.S. sanctioned several members of Xinjiang's political and economic hierarchy this week in a coordinated action over allegations of widespread abuse in the northwestern region.

Wang Yi and Sergei Lavrov rejected outside sniping at their authoritarian political systems and said they were working to further global progress on issues from climate change to the coronavirus pandemic.

"China will pay a price for its human rights abuses", US President Joe Biden warned on Tuesday,
He stated that he also discussed this issue by phone with the president of the most populous country in the world, Xi Jinping.
"There will be consequences for China," Biden said during last night's televised address on CNN, as reported by Reuters.
