On September 22, 1908, Bulgaria took a momentous step in its history by declaring independence from the Ottoman Empire. This date marks a significant milestone in Bulgarian history, showcasing the political acumen of the nation's leaders and their ability to capitalize on favorable international circumstances.

In the annals of Bulgarian history, few events stand as tall as the Unification of 1885. This momentous occasion marked a critical step towards realizing the national ideal of a united Bulgaria, bringing together the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia in defiance of great power politics and Ottoman rule.

Historical Context

"The Unification has several historical lessons that we must remember if we are to evolve. Until recently, the liberator of Bulgaria became the biggest opponent of the Unification".

Today marks 138 years since the declaration of independence of Eastern Rumelia from the Ottoman Empire and its union with the Principality of Bulgaria. In major cities throughout the country, the Bulgarian flag will be solemnly raised, military rituals will be performed and wreaths will be laid in memory of the dead.

ON 22 September Bulgaria celebrates the 113th anniversary of the declaration of its independence.

Today Bulgarians celebrate 136 years from the Unification of Bulgaria.

6th of September is the day on which the actual unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia takes place. An act that gave the country of Bulgaria the right to return to its borders, lands, that historically belong to it.
