Views on the nuclear program of Iran

Barack Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu will hold a post-row summit on Nov 9, hoping a massive 10 year defense deal will help them move beyond a bitter public fight that shook a decades-old alliance.

Iran considered pursuing a nuclear deterrent when it began its nuclear programme in the 1980s, during an eight-year war with Iraq, a former president has been quoted as saying. 

Iran?s Supreme Leader said on Sept. 3 that he backed a parliamentary vote on a historic nuclear deal reached with six major powers and said sanctions against his country should be lifted completely rather than suspended, state television reported. 

The deal to curb Iran's nuclear programme will bolster Tehran's ability to fund global terrorism by providing the Islamic state with "billions of dollars" in sanctions relief, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Aug. 29. 

Neutral Switzerland will officially lift on Aug. 13 sanctions against Iran that had been suspended since January 2014, the government announced on Aug. 13, citing a deal last month between Tehran and six big powers to curb Iran's nuclear program.

Saudi Arabia's leaders sought assurances on July 22 that the United States stands firmly against Iranian "interference" in the Middle East, during a visit by U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.

President Barack Obama denounced "chest-beating" critics and told a veterans group July 21 that those who oppose the diplomatic agreement to rein in Iran's nuclear program are some of the same people who were quick to want to go to war in Iraq and thought military action there would take only a matter of months.

The U.N. Security Council scheduled a vote for first thing July 20 morning on a resolution endorsing the Iran nuclear deal.
