Blast outside linens store rocks Glyfada in early hours

A major explosion outside a store selling linens and other household goods rocked the upscale southern Athenian suburb of Glyfada in the early hours of Tuesday.

The blast occurred shortly before 4 a.m. at 49 Vouliagmenis Avenue and was caused by a powerful explosive device placed outside the business, which sustained extensive damage.

No injuries were reported.

Bishops urge resistance to new religion courses at school

Two Greek bishops are rallying parents not to allow their children to be taught the new religion course programs at state-run schools.

Pavlos, Bishop of Glyfada, Elliniko, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Vari, issued a circular on Wednesday urging parents in his congregation to demand that their children are taught the previous curriculum and not the new "unacceptable" material.

Athens Riviera threatened by tanker oil spill (drone video footage)

Clean-up crews are scrambling to contain an oil spill from a Greek tanker as it menaces some of Athens’ most popular beaches.
The vessel, Agia Zoni II, was carrying 2,500 tonnes of fuel when it sank off the island of Salamis on Sunday.
Nearby beaches were soiled by the oil, but officials believed it could be contained given mild wind conditions.

Protecting Attica's wetlands

Many are familiar with the Schinias marsh, Lake Vouliagmeni, and possibly even the Vourkari wetlands. But Attica actually has 49 more wetlands, not counting known rivers, canals and streams. Most are in moderate or bad condition due to anarchic urban planning, and four have disappeared entirely.
