A major explosion outside a store selling linens and other household goods rocked the upscale southern Athenian suburb of Glyfada in the early hours of Tuesday.

The blast occurred shortly before 4 a.m. at 49 Vouliagmenis Avenue and was caused by a powerful explosive device placed outside the business, which sustained extensive damage.

No injuries were reported.

Firemen found the charred remains of an unidentified individual on Thursday in a burnt-out car in the area of Limanakia in Vouliagmeni, southern Athens. 

Two Greek bishops are rallying parents not to allow their children to be taught the new religion course programs at state-run schools.

Pavlos, Bishop of Glyfada, Elliniko, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Vari, issued a circular on Wednesday urging parents in his congregation to demand that their children are taught the previous curriculum and not the new "unacceptable" material.

Clean-up crews are scrambling to contain an oil spill from a Greek tanker as it menaces some of Athens’ most popular beaches.
The vessel, Agia Zoni II, was carrying 2,500 tonnes of fuel when it sank off the island of Salamis on Sunday.
Nearby beaches were soiled by the oil, but officials believed it could be contained given mild wind conditions.

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts will operate the Astir Palace resort at Vouliagmeni, southern Athens, under the name Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens, it was announced on Wednesday.

The Lake of Sounds, a series of classical music concerts organized with the support of the Latsis Foundation, gets under way at Lake Vouliagmeni on Athens's southern coast on Thursday, September 7.

Listed as a protected area for its natural beauty, Lake Vouliagmeni in southern Athens is viewed by most locals as a haunt for the elderly and infirm, who go there to ease their aches and pains in its therapeutic waters, and cave-divers keen to explore its network of underwater labyrinths.

Despite Greece's protracted financial crisis, the capital's southern coast has been undergoing a facelift, albeit a slow one, with an estimated 10 billion euros' worth of works that could transform the Athens Riviera into one of the most attractive metropolitan seafront areas in the Mediterranean.

Many are familiar with the Schinias marsh, Lake Vouliagmeni, and possibly even the Vourkari wetlands. But Attica actually has 49 more wetlands, not counting known rivers, canals and streams. Most are in moderate or bad condition due to anarchic urban planning, and four have disappeared entirely.
