NASA hears 'heartbeat' from Voyager 2 after blackout

NASA's distant Voyager 2 probe has sent a "heartbeat" signal to Earth after mission control mistakenly cut contact, the U.S. space agency said Tuesday Aug. 1.

Launched in 1977 to explore the outer planets and serve as a beacon of humanity to the wider universe, it is currently more than 12.3 billion miles (19.9 billion kilometers) from our planet - well beyond the solar system.

NASA Voyager 2 Could Be Nearing Interstellar Space

NASA's Voyager 2 probe, currently on a journey toward interstellar space, has detected an increase in cosmic rays that originate outside our solar system. Launched in 1977, Voyager 2 is a little less than 11 billion miles (about 17.7 billion kilometers) from Earth, or more than 118 times the distance from Earth to the Sun.

Publicity stunt

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras invited two deeply knowledgeable experts on climate change to his office Thursday.

It was a good and useful thing to do. But it would be better if he didn't only remember to turn to the experts on occasions when his public image demanded it.

You should have known better, Professor

Professor Stamatios Krimigis was well aware that Greece is second almost to none in its shocking lack of meritocracy. He knew that there are pockets of excellence at universities and institutions, people working in extremely unfavorable conditions, who, however, don't seek any kind of acknowledgment, partly because they are afraid that someone will come along to wreck it all.

40 Year Since a Bulgarian Song Launched Into Space on NASA's Voyager 1

40 years ago today a Bulgarian song launched into space on NASA's Voyager 1.

The Golden Record, including "Izleel e Delyo Haidutin" performed by Valya Balkanska, is still traveling through space. Valya was 35 years old when her voice took off for the stars. Today, the singer from the Rhodope Mountains is 75.

Happy 40th anniversary, Voyager 1!
