Homemade bomb fails to blast open ATM

Burglars fled empty-handed when an attempt to use a homemade bomb to break into an ATM outside a supermarket in Vrilissia, northern Athens, failed on Wednesday.

The unknown perpetrators are believed to have channeled flammable gas into the machine before igniting it to cause the 3.15 a.m. explosion. They however failed to retrieve any money, police said.

Mosquito control measures to be carried out in northern Attica

Authorities have announced the next areas for mosquito spraying in the wider Athens area.

Spraying will be conducted from August 13-20 in 12 municipalities in northern Attica: Halandri, Aghia Paraskevi, Holargos/Papagou, Nea Ionia, Pendeli, Maroussi, Vrilissia, Kifissia, Pefki/Lykovrissi, Psychico/Filothei, Iraklio and Metamorphosi.

Blood donations sought for Attica fire victims

Greek health authorities are calling for blood donations of blood and blood components to help burn victims from the deadly east Attica fire.

"In difficult times like these, we should all contribute as we can," the National Blood Center said in an announcement on Tuesday, stressing that supplies are currently short because of the summer holidays.

Grenade found outside publisher's residence in northern Athens

Authorities were investigating on Wednesday after a hand grenade was found outside the residence of a well-known publisher in the northern Athens suburb of Vrilissia.

It did not explode and its safety pin had not been removed.

Police removed the grenade as evidence and for further examination of possible fingerprints and other clues.
