Serbia mourns flood victims

BELGRADE - The Serbian government has declared a three-day period of mourning for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday over the great loss of life and suffering caused by floods in the country.

The decision to declare the three-day mourning was made at the government session held on Tuesday.

Creators of the Serbian blog Druga Strana, which published critical posts on the Serbian state's handling of the flooding, were forced to shut it down on Tuesday after repeat attacks on the site.

"The site has been under heavy attack so we decided to shut it down in order not to compromise other sites on the server," Nenad Milosavljevic said.

BELGRADE -- The scale of the disaster caused by the floods is ten times larger in Serbia than in other countries of the region, Tanjug quoted Aleksandar Vučić as saying.

Speaking on Tuesday, he also "expressed hope that this will not be reflected by the number of casualties."

Serbia Declares Days of Mourning For Victims

Serbia's government on Tuesday declared Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as days of mourning after severe floods claimed 20 lives and caused mass evacuations.

Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said that many people had perished in the floods, and that once the waters recede, the number will "certainly be even higher".

Street musician collects RSD 5,000 for flood-affected people

BELGRADE - Numerous companies and individuals raising funds for the people affected by floods in Serbia were joined by a street musician who managed to collect RSD 5,000.

In a subway in central Belgrade, Neven Kogovic staged a special program collecting money for people suffering in the flood-affected areas.

Food from strategic reserve to be delivered to flood victims

BELGRADE - The Serbian government has ordered the national directorate for the strategic reserves to give out 30 t of canned food, 50 t of flour and 5 t of powdered milk as aid for flood victims.

The Sector for Emergency Situations will distribute this aid in coordination with the Red Cross and local governments, the government office for media relations has stated.
