Westinghouse Should Return to Bulgaria, but 'Under New Conditions' - PM

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has voiced his hope that US-based Westinghouse will return to Bulgaria and build Unit 7 of the Kozloduy nuclear power plant, but under new conditions.

Westinghouse Electric Company was to build Unit 7 under an agreement with the previous elected government.

Bulgaria is only ready to work on the agreement with Westinghouse Electric for unit 7 of the Kozloduy NPP provided that the company participates in the project as an investor, according to Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

Borisov made clear Wednesday in Parliament that Bulgaria could not afford to implement the project unless US Westinghouse Electric joined the scheme as an investor.

US-based Westinghouse Electric Company has presented a project for the expansion of the Kozloduy nuclear power plant to the Bulgarian representatives at the European Parliament and to EU policy specialists.

The main topics of the meeting were the advantages of the Westinghouse AP1000 technology and the plans for the construction of unit 7 of the Kozloduy NPP.

Turkey in preliminary talks with US company on third nuclear plant

Turkey has entered exclusive preliminary talks with U.S.-based Westinghouse Electric Company, part of Japan’s Toshiba group, on building the country’s third nuclear power plant, Westinghouse said.

The talks will continue for six months and will be conducted by Turkish state-owned electricity generation company EÜAS, Turkish energy officials said Nov. 25.
