Colder air masses and strengthened northerly winds are coming – Which areas are affected

Bulgaria is experiencing unseasonably warm weather for early April, with temperatures soaring above normal levels across the country. The forecast calls for partly sunny skies with scattered clouds and light to moderate southerly winds. In Sofia, temperatures are expected to reach around 26°C, significantly higher than usual for this time of year.

Overnight, clear skies will dominate the western regions of the country, while the eastern areas will experience considerable cloud cover. Light precipitation, primarily in the form of rain, is expected in certain areas but is projected to cease by morning. In the eastern regions, a gentle northerly wind will prevail, while other areas will experience mostly calm conditions.

Climate change is effectively reducing the year's seasons to two, according to the head of the Greek Meteorological Society.

"We have observed the expansion of summer into the fall, while winter - especially the winter of 2023 - is showing higher temperatures, mainly because of climate change," Panagiotis Nastos told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.

The weather on December 20 promises a mix of sunshine and cloud cover across Bulgaria. The day will begin with mostly sunny conditions, especially in Eastern Bulgaria, gradually giving way to layered clouds around water bodies and basins. Expect increasing cloudiness in the afternoon, while Eastern Bulgaria remains predominantly sunny.

This Saturday is expected to bring cloudy skies and fog in the western regions of Bulgaria, while moderate south-westerly winds will persist, bringing warmer temperatures across the country. However, the eastern parts and mountainous areas may experience strong and gusty winds. Anticipate minimum temperatures ranging from 0°C in the west to 14°C in the southeast, around 4°C in Sofia.

Heavy rains and storms, accompanied by hail in some places, as well as southerly winds that will reach up to force 7 will characterize the weather over the coming weekend from Friday, weather forecasters at the National Observatory of Athens's meteo.gr service have said.

There will be a patchy high cloudiness in the lowlands before noon. The wind from the south will increase, more significantly in Eastern Bulgaria and in places north of the mountains. In the evening, a new increase in cloudiness will begin from the west and rain will fall in extreme western areas.

Today it will be sunny, in the morning hours in isolated places in the lowlands and around water bodies there will be fog or low cloudiness. A light wind will blow from the east-southeast. Minimum temperatures - between 6°C and 11°C; maximum - between 22°C and 27°C, in Sofia around 23°C.
