Turkey's Eastern Express has served more than 12,000 travelers since the service resumed in late December last year.

The Eastern Express runs 1,310 kilometers between Ankara and the eastern province of Kars, a journey that takes more than 30 hours.

The high-speed train services will resume in Turkey as of May 28 after they have been suspended as part of coronavirus precautions, a government official said on May 23. 

In a written statement, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Adil Karaismailoğlu said the train services suspended on March 28 will resume in four routes with 16 services in a day.

Turkey’s sprawling high-speed railway network will also boost train station construction across the country, as a total of 21 new stations are planned at routes through which trains pass.

The high-speed railway (YHT) service between Kocaeli and Ankara was canceled after a crane and a container fell onto the railway line late Aug. 7.

Due to strong winds, a crane – approximately weighing 200 tons – fell onto the railway line used by the YHT service in the Körfez district of Kocaeli, resulting in the suspension of the YHT service at 5:00 p.m. on Aug. 7.

Turkey’s long-awaited 8.6 billion Turkish Lira ($4.1 billion) high-speed train link between Istanbul and Ankara has begun operating from Istanbul’s Pendik station.
