The initiatives undertaken by the government to reduce traffic on key roads, such as Kifissos, were mentioned, among other things, in an interview today the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras.

Starting Sunday, drivers on the Attiki Odos highway will pay reduced tolls under new management. 

The Greek government officially transferred operations to Nea Attiki Odos MAE and GEK Terna, which will manage the highway for the next 25 years, beginning at midnight.

GEK Terna on Friday completed the one-off payment of 3.27 billion euros after being selected as the preferred investor in the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund's tender for the 25-year concession of the Attiki Odos highway.

The government would love to see the money from the concessions of Attiki Odos and Egnatia Highway reach its coffers this year, in order to help pay back part of the country's debt. Increasingly, this seems unlikely.

Parts of the Attiki Odos beltway will be closed starting Wednesday at 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Thursday, due to scheduled maintenance works.

According to Attiki Odos, both directions of the eastern section of the Ymittos ring road will be affected. 

The fine is imposed on the companies Attiki Odos SA (Concessionaire Company) and ATTICA ROUTES SA (Operation and Maintenance Company of Attiki Odos)

More than 9,500 requests had been submitted, according to information, as of yesterday on the special platform of Attiki Odos for the vehicles that were blocked during the "Elpida" severe weather front.

The most dramatic situation is on the Attiki Odos highway, the bypass around Athens that connects the capital with the airport, where hundreds of vehicles are currently still trapped, reports the Greek portal Kathimerini, as Blic finds out.

The auction of the Attiki Odos project for the extension of Kymis Avenue in northern Athens is expected in the first half of 2021, in the hope that it will ease the pressure on Kifissou Avenue and ensure access to the Athens-Lamia National Highway.

A big fire at a plastics factory in the northern Athens suburb of Metamorfossi has shut down the highway to Thessaloniki, as well as the Attiki Odos ring road, near its junction with the highway.

Early in the afternoon, the direction to the north was opened to traffic.

Tolls on the Attiki Odos open segment to the airport are free.
