Borrell Highlights Effectiveness of EU’s Operation Shields as a Security Force

Houthi aerial drone hits Greek-owned ship in the Red Sea, causing damage and injuries

An aerial drone launched by Yemen's Houthi rebels struck and damaged a Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned bulk carrier in the Red Sea on Sunday, officials said, the latest attack by the group targeting shipping in the vital maritime corridor.

Greece’s mission in the Red Sea

Greece sent its frigate "Psara" to the Red Sea this week to join Operation Aspides, the EU's mission in the Red Sea to protect merchant ships from Houthi attacks. The Psara is replacing the Hydra, which completed a three month deployment in the Red Sea, at a time when the Houthis are escalating their campaign.

Greek-owned ship crew rescued, one mariner missing

The US Naval Forces Central Command announced Sunday the rescue of the crew, with one mariner still missing, from the Greek-owned M/V Tutor, a Liberian-flagged vessel, by sailors of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group following a Houthi attack in the Red Sea.

The bulk carrier suffered severe flooding from an unmanned surface vessel strike on Wednesday.

One seafarer killed in Houthi attack on Greek-owned ship

A seafarer on the Greek-owned bulk carrier Tutor was killed in Wednesday's Houthi attack against the ship, it was reported on Thursday. 

The carrier is owned by Evalend Shipping, which, according to reports, has already notified the Greek authorities of the seafarer's death.

It is not yet clear if the seafarer died when the shell hit the ship or when the engine room flooded. 

Houthis detain aid workers, UN staff: Aid group, diplomatic source

Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels have detained more than a dozen aid workers, including United Nations staff, in an apparently coordinated sweep, a diplomatic source and a Yemeni NGO said on June 7.

At least 18 aid workers were kidnapped in four rebel-held parts of the war-torn country, the Yemeni Mayyun Organization for Human Rights said, listing 10 workers from U.N. agencies.

Houthi Red Sea attacks decline in last week as navies act, Greece says

Closer international cooperation between naval missions in the Red Sea has reduced the number of attacks by Yemen's Houthis over the past week, Greek Shipping Minister Christos Stylianides told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

Greece is the home of the headquarters of the European Union's naval operation in the Red Sea, which is dubbed "Aspides" and in Greek means "Shields".
