Yiannis Boutaris, winemaker, Thessaloniki mayor and all-around maverick dies at 82
Yiannis Boutaris, winemaker and mayor, died late Saturday at the age of 82.
His death was announced by Kyr-Yianni, the winemaking business he founded and which is run by his two sons, in a Facebook post, in both English and Greek.

AI recruited in effort to prevent forest fires
Artificial intelligence is being deployed in the battle for the prevention and management of forest fires through innovative programs developed and coordinated by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA).
More specifically, forest fire risk is being assessed through the Deep Cube and SeasFire programs, which started in January 2021 and March 2022 respectively.

Empty chair protest highlights woes of restaurateurs
Members of the union representing Greek restaurant, cafe and bar owners, known by its acronym POESE, on Wednesday set up hundreds of empty chairs in central squares in Athens and other cities to underline the repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic on their businesses.

The Piraeus Bank Cultural Foundation presents a collection of photographs by Theodoros Papageorgiou, who traveled across the Peloponnese capturing the beauty of its lakes, beaches and rivers. "The Color of Water" in on display at the foundation's Open-Air Water Power Museum through January 6. Opening hours are Wednesdays to Mondays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Golden Dawn MP banned from House for two weeks
Golden Dawn lawmaker Yiannis Lagos was on Thursday banned from Parliament for 14 days and had his pay docked for insulting members of the House and threatening physical violence during a debate in late March on Greek-Turkish relations and ongoing name talks with Skopje.
