Some 3.7 million Croatian voters are heading to the polls on Sunday for the second round of the local elections, choosing new mayors, municipal heads and county prefects.

Anka Mrak-Taritas, the opposition Zagreb mayor candidate, challenges the incumbent Milan Bandic, promising new construction and recycling projects, and reforms of kindergartens, schools and the traffic system.

Some 3.7 million Croatian voters will be heading to the polls on Sunday for the local elections, choosing representatives for neighbourhood, city, municipality and county assemblies, as well as directly electing mayors, municipal heads, and county prefects.

The results of Sunday's elections reflected the current balance in support between the two strongest Croatian parties, the centre-left SDP and opposition centre-right HDZ.

A total of 71,000 voters went to the polls in five Croatian towns and five municipalities, in the second round of early elections for town and municipality mayors.
