Ad featuring Turkey’s iconic star stirs debate on ‘respect’

A bank commercial on Turkish television featuring the imitation of Zeki Müren, an iconic Turkish singer touted as the country's "sun of art," has stirred a vicious debate on social media involving famous figures.

The debate was ignited last week by a remark made by Barış Yarkadaş, a former lawmaker of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and also a columnist.

Awarded composer Selçuk Tekay dies at age 68

Selçuk Tekay, one of the prominent composers of Turkish classical music, has died at the age of 68 due to a heart attack.

The news of Tekay's death was announced by the famous artist Emel Sayın.

"I can't find the words to say, I'm so, so sorry. May your place be heaven, Selçuk Tekay. My condolences and patience to his family and all his loved ones," Sayın wrote on Twitter.

Turkish clarinet legend Kandıralı dies at 90

The Turkish clarinet legend, Mustafa Kandıralı, known to be one of the best clarinet virtuosos not only in the country but also in the world, has died at the age of 90 due to organ failure.

Kandıralı, whose original surname is Kadıoğlu, was born in the northwestern province of Kocaeli's Kandıra district in 1930.

Turkish cinema, music digitally protected

With a new work initiated by the Culture and Tourism Ministry, the unforgettable films of Turkish cinema such as “Hababab Sınıfı” (Chaos Class) and “Malkoçoğlu,” as well as music from artists such as Zeki Müren, Müzeyyen Senar and Barış Manço, will be transferred to digital archives to ensure their protection.

 

Turkey's top soldier meets US counterpart at İncirlik base

Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar met his U.S. counterpart, Gen. Joseph Dunford at the İncirlik Air Base in the southern province of Adana on Dec. 5, the Turkish General Staff has announced. 

The meeting came while Dunford was at the base to celebrate an early Christmas with U.S. soldiers at the base as a part of the annual USO Holiday Tour. 

Canadian PM welcomes Turkish film festival in Vancouver

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has hailed the upcoming Vancouver Turkish Film Festival, which will take place between Nov. 25 and 27. 

"I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending the third annual Vancouver Turkish Film Festival (VTTF)," Trudeau wrote in his letter sent to Hakan Burcuoğlu, the founder and the director of the festival.
