Nearly 1.2 million babies born in Turkey in 2019

Almost 1.2 million babies were born in Turkey in 2019, according to data made public by the Interior Ministry's General Directorate of Civil Registration and Citizenship.

Of the 1,180,840 babies born, 8,816 male babies were named Yusuf, and 6,857 male babies were named Eymen.
The most popular names given to female babies were Zeynep, with 13,420, followed by Elif, with 8,586.

Turkish designer's collection pays homage to 'Lost Jewel'

For Spring/Summer 2019, Turkish fashion designer Zeynep Kartal's collection celebrates the designer's ties with both her Turkish heritage and the place she now calls her second home, England. The collection also pays homage to "Nelson's Lost Jewel," by Martyn Downer, and the diamond chelengk given to Lord Nelson by Ottoman Sultan Selim III of Turkey. 

Turkish baby born with two lower teeth

A baby was born in central Turkey with two lower teeth overnight on May 3, leaving the newborn's parents both stunned and concerned.   

The baby boy, named Miraç, came into the world in the Central Anatolian province of Nev?ehir, bordering the scenic Cappadocia region, weighing 2.6 kilograms and measuring 48 centimeters, pediatrician Dr. Zeynep ?bi?o?lu told reporters.   

Art continues despite terror attack

Istanbul's interdisciplinary art festival, Pera Fest, which has chosen "Art against Discrimination" as the theme of its 14th edition, opened on March 21 with a poetry & music event at Tiyatro Pera. Despite the general atmosphere of fear and anxiety due to the recent terror attack's proximity to the event, many of the invited artists attended the festival's opening event.     

Pera Fest counters discrimination

Pera Fest, to be organized under the theme of "art against discrimination," will open on March 21 at Istanbul's Tiyatro Pera. Poems and songs addressing discrimination will be performed during the night. 

The 14th edition of the event will host three panel discussions, three short and three feature film screenings and a theater play until March 27.

Young Turkish woman accepts marriage proposal on Twitter

A young Turkish woman accepted a marriage proposal tweeted by her boyfriend, whom she met on Twitter two years ago, after a thousand people "favorited" the tweet.

Things started to unfold when Onur Cengiz, a social media strategist for an Istanbul-based advertising agency, wrote about his willingness to propose once his tweet received 250 favorites.
