Türkiye is set to mark the 25th anniversary of one of its most devastating earthquakes on Aug. 17, a disaster that killed over 17,000 lives across the Marmara Region.

In a study on active fault lines in the northwestern province of Bursa, a previously unknown fault line was discovered, which could cause a 7.3-magnitude earthquake.

The devastating impact of the 1999 Marmara earthquake was solemnly remembered on Aug. 17, as communities across Türkiye's northwestern provinces gathered to mark the 24th anniversary of the catastrophe.

The northwestern province of Bursa, likely to be severely affected by a much-anticipated Marmara quake, sits on 11 active fault lines, not six, the number set by the previous studies, a report by Türkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) has said.

While almost 24 years have passed following the 1999 Marmara earthquake, repair and retrofitting of 1,359 moderately damaged buildings in Istanbul have not been carried out until 2021.

A seven-storied building in Istanbul's Bahçelievler district collapsed on Feb. 14, causing damage on the adjacent buildings.

The 30-year-old building was evacuated last month due to security risks, so there were no residents in the building at the time of the collapse, the governor's office said.
