German-based NGO Rigardu, which helps refugees on their way to Europe, passed reports to BIRN that allegedly show that Croatian police used violence against refugees in June.

Rigardu took statements from people who said they had witnessed the use of violence by the Croatian police, mostly on the border with Serbia, from where the refugees have been entering Croatia.

After Hungary, Croatia appears ready to close its border to war refugees, mostly desperate Syrian and Iraqis, but also to huge groups of third country nationals from as far as away as Bangladesh exploiting the refugee crisis to illegally enter Europe until they reach their desired destination.

About  29,000 migrants have entered Croatia since September 16 when Hungary sealed off its border with Serbia, thus redirecting migrant flow to Croatia, Hina reported, citing figures available as of Monday morning.

Croatia's President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic has asked Armed Forces Chief-of-Staff Gen. Drago Lovric to put the army on a higher state of alert to protect the country's borders from a potential increase in migratory pressure, HINA reported on Thursday.

Croatian police said on Wednesday that migrants have continued arriving from Serbia into the eastern border town of Tovarnik after Hungary closed its border with Serbia to halt a rising tide of migrants.

The move by the Hungarian government prompted non-EU Serbia to redirect buses carrying hundreds of migrants and refugees to the border with another EU member state - Croatia.
