A number of Turkish doctors and rights groups have slammed the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for rejecting a request by two jailed educators, who have been on hunger strikes for nearly 150 days, to order Ankara to release them on health grounds.

Several Turkish human rights associations have slammed a number of media reports on the recent detention of human rights activists for "defaming and criminalizing" the rights activists. 

Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı, the chair of the Turkish Human Rights Foundation (TİHV), received the Physicians for Human Rights' (PHR) Human Rights Award on April 18 at a ceremony in New York.

The PHR released a statement regarding Fincancı, hailing her as an anti-torture expert who has dedicated her career to defending human rights.    

Thousands of people fled the Sur district of Turkey's southeastern Diyarbak?r province on Jan. 27 after authorities fighting outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants there expanded a 24-hour curfew to include five more neighborhoods.
