Ergenekon Terror Organization

A prosecutor told the Istanbul 4th Heavy Penal Court on June 21 that some 19 senior generals, including former Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ, could not be tried in local courts regarding the reopened Ergenekon plot case. 

The High Council of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) has concluded that the six judges and two prosecutors who worked on the Ergenekon case, prosecuting 274 suspects on charges of attempting to overthrow the government of the time, were serving the movement of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen. 

The overturning by Turkey's top court of appeal of the so-called "Ergenekon coup plot trial," which was initiated in 2007 and lasted until 2011, is being hailed as one of the most significant legal developments in recent Turkish history. 

The Supreme Court of Appeals has overturned convictions in the Ergenekon coup plot trial as the alleged Ergenekon Terror Organization could not be found and identified. The Ergenekon probe dates back to 2007 after a cache of explosives found at the home of a former military officer was alleged to be part of a big conspiracy against the government.

The Justice and Development Party (AKP) government supported the "Ergenekon" coup plot case between 2007 and 2011, according to Turkey's former military chief, ?lker Ba?bu?, who claimed the main actors behind the conspiracy were the sympathizers of U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen. 

The Turkish Supreme Court of Appeals on April 23 concluded its reasoned decision for the "Ergenekon" coup plot case, which it overturned last week after ruling that the "Ergenekon Terror Organization," the target of the allegations, did not exist at all.
