Two arrested over Thessaloniki hooligan attack

Two men, aged 23 and 24, suspected of participating in the hooligan attack that occurred late Monday night in the area of Nea Michaniona in the northern port city of Thessaloniki, were arrested by the police on Tuesday.

They are expected to appear before a prosecutor on Wednesday, while the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Two men injured in sports-related assault in Thessaloniki

Police in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, have arrested 12 suspects in connection with an attack against two men on Monday night that appears to have been motivated by local soccer rivalries.

The two men, brothers aged 37 and 42 years old, told the police they were assaulted while walking in the seaside suburb of Nea Michaniona at around 8.30 p.m. by a gang of at least 10 males.

The citizens of Thessaloniki strolling along the port of Thermaikos were in for a surprise, as the waters had turned red. The natural phenomenon, which is known as the “red tide”, is created from a rapid development of uni-cellar photosynthetic plankton organisms. It is phenomenon that appears on a regular basis in Thessaloniki, which results in reddish spots on the water surface.
