Türkiye detains 15 over assaulting US servicemen in İzmir

Turkish security forces detained 15 members of a radical nationalist youth for attacking two U.S. military personnel in the western province of İzmir on Sept. 3.

Those arrested were members of the Turkish Youth Union (TGB), whose members have previously committed attacks against U.S. soldiers in several cities.

Building of İzmir Economic Congress reopened in its 100th year

The historical building of the İzmir Economic Congress, where the first economic policies of the country were discussed, has been reopened in its 100th year after being restored in line with its original form.

The Banka-Han building, also knowns as the Guiffray Inn, where the first economic congress was held in 1923, was demolished in 1979 and turned into a parking lot.

İzmir Governor's Office bans sale, use of fireworks without permission as part of state of emergency

The İzmir Governor's Office banned the sale and use of fireworks as part of the state of emergency on Aug. 2.

Fireworks are commonly used in wedding ceremonies, football matches and some celebratory events across Turkey.

The governor's office stated some complaints were filed against the frequent use of fireworks and firecrackers, which could cause harm.

Turkish 'serial killer' given aggravated life sentences over committing three murders

A court in Istanbul ordered on March 9 two times aggravated life-term sentences for Atalay Filiz, a Turkish "serial killer" who became widely known after committing a series of murders, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Filiz, 30, accused of murdering three people, including a Russian national, was sentenced on charges of "committing deliberate murder."

500 sex workers retire after winning battle against employers in Turkey's west

A total of 500 sex workers have gained the right to retire after victory in a struggle against their employers over their social security rights in the western province of İzmir. 

Turkey's Social Security Institution (SGK) determined that the premiums of a total of 1,800 sex workers working in state brothels had not been paid, daily Habertürk reported on Nov. 8.
