A volcano erupted on Satsuma-Iojima Island in southeastern Japan, Reuters and TASS reported, citing the Japan's Meteorological Agency.

No damage to the island in Kagoshima Prefecture was reported. 

Locals have been warned not to approach the volcano. There is a village with about a hundred inhabitants  about 2.5 kilometres from the volcano.

At least 710,000 people in southwestern Japan have received a recommendation from local authorities to leave their homes and move to evacuation centres because of heavy rainfall in the region, BTA reports.

The death toll from torrential rains and flooding that swept through Japan's south has reached 25, the government said on July 11, as rescue teams battled through thick mud to rescue more than 100 still stranded.

At least two people have been killed and 18 others are missing in huge floods that are surging through southern Japan, with authorities warning hundreds of thousands of people to flee.

Unprecedented torrential rain has caused rivers to burst their banks, sweeping away roads and houses, and destroying schools.

A U.S. military helicopter crashed in waters off the Japanese southern island of Okinawa during a training mission on Aug. 12, injuring six people and prompting Japan?s government to demand a probe and steps to prevent a recurrence. 

Japan said on August 4 it was suspending construction of a contentious U.S. air base on the island of Okinawa for a month to give time for talks between the central government and island authorities opposed to the facility.
