Sajmište concentration camp

Aleksandar Vucic inaugurated the new plaque on Thursday near the banks of the River Sava, close to the location of the Staro Sajmiste (Old Trade Fair) concentration camp, which operated during World War II.

The deputy mayor of Belgrade added that after the law was adopted, a Memorial Center would be established to preserve the memory of the victims of the Nazi concentration camp at the former Belgrade Fair, the Zemun Jewish Camp and the Zemun Reception Camp.

Wartime prisoners marked the Day of Camp Inmates by gathering at former detention centres to commemorate those who died and to demand better treatment for those who survived.

Seventy years after the end of World War II, the Belgrade city authorities have repeated promises that a memorial at the largest Nazi concentration camp in the region will be built next year.
