Bulgaria's Long Working Week Linked to Low Incomes

Bulgaria stands out among European Union countries for having one of the longest average working weeks, clocking in at 39 hours compared to the EU average of just over 36 hours per week, according to the latest data from Eurostat. Only Greece exceeds Bulgaria with nearly 40 hours, while Romania and Poland also exceed 39 hours weekly, reports the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).

As the rest of the world zigs toward a four-day workweek, Greece is opting to zag. On Monday, a law came into effect that allows some companies to enforce a six-day workweek, a shift that is intended to prop up the country's aging workforce and compensate strapped workers while respecting workers' rights.

The new six-day work regulation has been implemented from July 1 in certain sectors, namely in businesses that by their nature are continuous in nature and those that already operate on a 24-hour basis 5 or 6 days a week.
