Gulf leaders, including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, met with EU counterparts in Brussels on Wednesday for talks they hoped could help defuse an "extremely dangerous escalation" in the Middle East.

For the first time, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will attend the first Summit of the EU-Persian Gulf Cooperation Council.

He will attend a landmark meeting between leaders of the European Union and Arab Gulf countries in Brussels, according to a Politico article.

 As the world rushed to condemn the Russian invasion of its smaller neighbor, the wealthy Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), have largely kept quiet. Middle East experts say their reticence is understandable given what's at play - energy, money and security.

Key Arab League nations, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE, have severed diplomatic ties with Qatar after Bahrain said it was cutting all ties and contacts with Doha. Qatar is accused of backing terrorist groups and meddling in other countries' affairs.
