A three-member misdemeanor appeals court in Athens announced on Tuesday the conviction of three of the eight defendants charged in connection with the 2017 flash floods in Mandra, west of Athens, which claimed the lives of 25 people.

An Athens prosecutor has brought charges against Attica Regional Governor Rena Dourou and another nine officials in connection with the flash floods in Mandra, western Attica, in November 2017 which resulted in the deaths of 25 people and the destruction of hundreds of properties.

Following months of investigation, the Athens prosecutor's office has summoned Attica Regional Governor Rena Dourou and another 10 officials as suspects in connection with the flash floods in Mandra, western Attica, last November, which resulted in the death of 23 people and the destruction of hundreds of properties.

An aerial view of Mandra in western Attica on Wednesday showed local streets submerged in floodwaters following several hours of heavy rainfall. Ioanna Kriekouki, the mayor of Mandra, where 20 people died in flash floods last November, said on Wednesday that there has been no progress in flood-prevention work pledged by the government.

New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis pledged on Wednesday to ensure that major flood protection works are completed.

He made the promise during a visit to Mandra in western Athens, where 23 people died in flash floods earlier this month.

Residents of the western fringes of the Greek capital struggled Thursday to clean up the devastation caused by flash floods that killed at least 15 people, while rescue crews searched for five people who remained missing.
