Palestinian prisoners in Israel

A Palestinian prisoners watchdog said Tuesday that a man shot dead by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank the previous day had been freed during the November truce in the Gaza war.

Efforts to broker a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip gain traction as Israel reportedly agrees to a US-mediated proposal involving a Palestinian prisoner exchange. CNN reveals that the deal, spearheaded by CIA director William Burns, entails the release of approximately 700 Palestinian detainees in exchange for 40 Israeli prisoners.

Israel has reportedly agreed to cease hostilities in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, as announced by US President Joe Biden. Biden stated in an interview with NBC that Israel had committed to refraining from military operations between March 10 and April 9.

Israel Aug. 4 used a controversial decades-old form of detention without trial against an alleged Jewish extremist for the first time, following an outcry over the death of a Palestinian toddler in an arson attack.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas was to head to Turkey on July 18 to push a ceasefire in Gaza after Egyptian-mediated negotiations stalled and Israel launched a ground operation.

Cairo has been the hub of intense negotiations to end the 11-day conflict between Hamas and Israel, after the Palestinian militants in Gaza rejected an initial Egyptian truce proposal.

Dozens of Palestinian prisoners who had refused food for 62 days have suspended their hunger strike after reaching a deal with the Israel Prisons Service, their lawyer told AFP.
