No ‘quick wins’ in defending democracy

Democracy is under threat across the world. Fewer people today live in democracies than did two decades ago. Opposition to democracy, and to capitalism, has grown as populists launch "culture wars" - cruelly exploiting migrants and minorities - and appeal to the socially and economically excluded. This is a cocktail variously stirred by Trump, Brexit, Modi, Le Pen, Orban and Meloni.

India to sell 5 percent of insurance giant in IPO

India plans to sell a 5-percent stake in insurance giant LIC in what could potentially be the country's largest initial public offering, according to a regulatory filing on Feb. 13.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is desperate for proceeds from the IPO of the Life Insurance Corporation of India and the sale of other state assets to help fix its tattered public finances.

India posts record new COVID deaths after data revision

India on June 10 recorded a global record of more than 6,000 coronavirus deaths in 24 hours after one state dramatically revised upwards its data, stoking suspicions that the country's toll is much higher than reported.

According to health ministry figures, 6,148 people died in the previous 24 hours, taking total fatalities to almost 360,000, the world's third-highest.    

Hospitals in India Overloaded as Country Sees Another Record Peak in Covid-19 Cases

New coronavirus cases in India are 273,810, with 1,619 deaths on Monday, which is a new daily record amid a second wave of the pandemic. Hospitals and health care infrastructure is overburdened.

The latest peak brought the total cases to 15 million, with 178,769 deaths so far, stated Indian Health Ministry.
