Ecuador's presidential candidate was killed during a campaign rally.
Fernando Villavicencio, who is also a former lawmaker, was shot dead in the capital, Quito. His Movimiento Construye party said on Twitter that gunmen attacked its offices in the capital, Quito.
President Guillermo Lasso vowed that the act would not go unpunished.
El Salvador stadium stampede kills 12
Twelve people were killed on May 20 in a stampede at an El Salvador stadium where football fans had gathered to watch a local tournament, police said.
Authorities said initial reports pointed to a crush of fans who tried to enter Cuscatlan Stadium in the Central American country's capital San Salvador to watch a match between teams Alianza and FAS.
