Slovenia reducing staff at Russian embassy from 41 to eight
Ljubljana – The Foreign Ministry summoned Russian Ambassador Timur Eyvazov to express Slovenia’s strongest protest against and shock at the killings of civilians in Bucha and other towns in Ukraine. The ambassador was also notified that Slovenia is reducing the number of staff at the Russian embassy in Ljubljana from 41 to eight, or by 80%.
Slovenj Gradec mayor voted best in all 12 urban municipalities
Ljubljana – The latest public opinion poll measuring how happy locals are with the work of their mayors in Slovenia’s 12 urban municipalities sees Slovenj Gradec Mayor Tilen Klugler receiving the highest mark, followed by Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Janković and Murska Sobota Mayor Aleksander Jevšek.
Climbing the bell tower in Kranj for stunning views
Kranj – The Kranj Parish has renovated the bell tower of the local St. Cantianus Church, the most recognisable feature in Kranj’s townscape, which was declared a cultural monument of national importance this year. Visitors are now able to climb the bell tower’s 163 steps to enjoy panoramic views.
Bike path launched between Slovenia EU presidency hub and Kranj
Kranj – A month after the start of the Slovenian EU presidency, a cycle route was launched running between the northern town of Kranj and Brdo pri Kranju, the main venue for presidency-related events. To honour Slovenia’s second stint at the helm of the Council of the EU, Kranj will also plant trees along the lane in the autumn.
Garnbret bags another World Cup victory before Olympics
Ljubljana – Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret continues to excel at this year’s climbing World Cup, having won her fourth event this season in Villars, Switzerland on Saturday, which raises hope for the Tokyo Olympics, where she will be the country’s main contender for gold.
Climber Lučka Rakovec crowned European lead champion
This is the biggest success in the career of 18-year-old Rakovec and confirms Slovenia has an incredible wealth of sports climbing talent that goes well beyond the reigning triple world champion Janja Garnbret who is not competing in Edinburgh.
Garnbret also won lead gold at the August World Championships in Hachioji while silver went to her compatriot Mia Krampl.
