Albanian nationalism in North Macedonia

Clashes occurred late last night in Skopje, during Albanian celebrations for Albanian Flag Day.

Young Albanians, among others, tore up and burned Northern Macedonia flags in the Albanian district of Skopje in the city center, and there were shots fired in the air.

What no one imagined was that Ahmeti's DUI was promoting a profound conceptual and ideological redesign, in effect, becoming a green party.

Party with history of surprises

Thousands of ethnic Albanians took to the streets of Skopje on Friday for a "protest for justice", demanding freedom for the five ethnic Albanians who were sentenced to prison on Tuesday for the 2012 murders of five ethnic Macedonians.

Police in North Macedonia said Monday that eight men have been arrested on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks in the country and officers have seized a large quantity of weapons.

Police said the men were arrested late Sunday and are between 21- and 31-years-old. One of the suspects had a previous conviction of participation in the Islamic State group.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, North Macedonia this year decided against holding a traditional banquet to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the historic 2001 Ohrid Peace Accord which ended a short-lived conflict that year by granting more rights to the country's ethnic Albanians.
