Slovenian physicist Dušan Petrač, who was a leading NASA scientist, has died aged 91. The news of the death of the long-term member of the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) has been announced by SDS leader Janez Janša.

The cyberattack on Slovenia's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of which the public was officially informed on 7 April had been in progress at least since March 2022 when the previous government was still in office, new media reports have revealed. China is believed to have been behind the attack.

Slovenia's current and former prime ministers, Robert Golob and Janez Janša, clashed over their cabinets' track records during an acrimonious 14-hour debate at the National Assembly on 19 April that wrapped up without conclusions or a vote of no confidence, which would be the usual course of action in an interpellation.

Janez Bratovž of JB Restaurant in Ljubljana has been named Slovenian chef of the year by the French restaurant guide Gault&Millau and his restaurant was added to the ten that received the highest accolade, the four toques.

"If you've ever eaten well in a Slovenian restaurant, Janez Bratovž certainly contributed to that," the restaurant guide said.

The leader of Slovenia's largest opposition party, Janez Janša, revisited Kyiv on 27 March, a year after he visited the Ukrainian capital in his capacity as prime minister, shortly after the start of the Russian invasion. Slovenia's current Prime Minister Robert Golob is to visit Kyiv soon.

Janez Gorišek, a civil engineer who designed the giant hill in Planica in the late 1960s together with his older brother Vlado and is considered a pioneer of ski flying, has died aged 89.

Janez Zemljarič, a politician who held several top positions during communist times and was believed to have retained significant power after Slovenia's independence, was laid to rest at Ljubljana Žale cemetery on 6 January. The government's decision to bury him with military honours sparked controversy as Zemljarič also served as the head of secret police.

Ljubljana – Slovenia has entered the autumn wave of coronavirus infections, which is projected to peak in mid- or late October, modelling expert Janez Žibert of the Ljubljana Faculty of Health Sciences has told the STA. More than 2,500 people tested positive for coronavirus on Monday, which Žibert says indicates the country has entered a new, autumn wave of Covid-19.

Ljubljana – Lawyer Nataša Pirc Musar has increased her lead in the presidential race after the ruling party’s candidate Marta Kos pulled out, a poll run by the newspaper Delo on Saturday suggests. Pirc Musar gained five percentage points in a fortnight to 31% as Anže Logar, the former foreign minister, stayed at 23%.
