Student arrested for possession of child abuse material

Police have arrested an 18-year-old student in Piraeus on suspicion of possessing child abuse material and offering it for sale.

Acting on information from foreign authorities, prosecutors began investigating the individual, who was offering sexual abuse material on the internet in exchange for payment or similar abuse material.

About 1,000 cases of child abuse are registered in 2019 by the Agency for Social Assistance. Most cases were registered in Sofia, Montana, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo. This was reported today by Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Policy Zornitsa Rusinova to the delegates of the two-day regional conference aimed at preventing and dealing with violence against children, the social ministry said.

Turkey's religious body issues fatwa against underage marriage

Turkey's Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet) has issued a fatwa against underage marriages, saying they "shattered the lives of children."

The fatwa, included in a release responding to frequently asked questions from the public, said underage marriage could never be approved from a religious perspective.

An 8-year-old girl was sexually abused by a 24-year-old guy living in the same apartment building in 2012. The man abused another neighbor's daughter and when their moms learned about the situation they went to the police. A case was opened. The defendant was sentenced to three years and nine months on charges of sexual abuse.

Four political parties agree to launch a probe on sexual child abuse cases

All four political parties in the Turkish parliament have jointly agreed to launch a parliamentary inquiry into cases of sexual abuse against children following a tense debate late March 23, when the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) rejected the opposition's motion for an in-depth investigation on specific child abuse cases in the Central Anatolian province of Karaman.
