Elektroprivreda Bosne i Hercegovine

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved an EUR 200 million restructuring line to EPS.

The bank is thus "supporting a comprehensive reform program for the power sector in Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), a state-owned utility that generates, distributes and supplies electricity across the country," a statement said.

The trade union of Elektroprivreda BiH, one of the two power companies in Bosnia's Federation entity, has warned of imminent strike action if the government goes ahead with a plan to cut their salaries.

A strike by miners in the Federation, which was scheduled for Monday, was averted at the last moment after the entity's government agreed at a meeting with the miners' union to increase electricity prices in order to modernise the Federation's mines. 

From January 1, people in Bosnia will be able to choose who supplies their electricity after the country adopted a regulation opening up the market.

However, consumers' associations warn that most citizens are unaware of the change and what it means.

Bosnia's Federation parliament is due to decide at a July 23 session on the future of what has been called the biggest single post-war investment in Bosnia - construction of Bloc 7 of the power plant in Tuzla.
