A probe by Greece's Internal Affairs Division has unveiled a covert network of police officers allegedly linked to major drug cartels, with shocking revelations raising questions about systemic corruption.

Corruption cases involving public officials abound and are on the rise. Security officers at Piraeus Port arrested for trafficking in cocaine; border guards in the northeastern city of Orestiada involved in human trafficking; customs officials taking part in a contraband fuel scheme; a prison guard caught trying to smuggle hashish into Korydallos Prison.

A police officer in charge of an Athens police department was apprehended Wednesday for the misappropriation of service firearms. Following a routine inspection by an armorer, discrepancies in handheld weapons assigned to the officer were identified.

Amid the outcry over widespread illegal construction on the island of Mykonos and the state finally deciding to intervene and order demolitions recently, the role of some policemen with close connections to the builders engaged in illegal activity has drawn the spotlight.

Four police officers were arrested Saturday for allegedly beating and torturing a detainee.

The arrests were made by Greek police's Internal Affairs Division. The arrested, a higher officer, two lower-ranking policemen and a member of the Special Guard unit were responsible for guarding and transferring detainees.
