The scientific community is sounding the alarm over the water scarcity alert that has been sounded in many parts of the country. A total of 14 municipalities in the country have been declared a state of emergency by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection.

Experts are expressing concern about the possible intensity of weather phenomena in the coming summer, and not without reason, given the recent warm winter, the hottest year in modern history in 2023 and extreme heatwaves and devastating, widespread fires.

Greece smashed a total of nine climate records in 2023, according to a recent report by Climatebook.gr, a website dedicated to the subject, with expert contributors.

Only a small layer of artificial snow creates the necessary conditions for skiers in the Alps. Europe, including Greece, is gradually losing its snow due to climate change, with serious effects not only on the economy, since ski tourism is severely affected, but also on the environment.

Heavy rainfall from the Elias weather system has struck parts of northern Evia, Greece's second largest island located east of Athens, where over 50,000 hectares of forest were devastated by massive wildfires in 2021.

Higher temperatures are coming soon in Greece, and with them the dreaded wildfire alerts. And, this year, the danger could be heightened because of low rain and snow coverage during the winter months.
