Beşiktaş mayor apologizes for municipality's Freddie Mercury tweet marking LGBT Pride Week

The mayor of Istanbul's Beşiktaş district has apologized over a tweet shared on the municipality's Twitter account celebrating LGBT Pride Week.

The Beşiktaş Municipality on June 19 had shared the image of an LGBT flag hung on the façade of its building with a caption reading "We are the soldiers of Freddie Mercury."

The tweet was deleted from the account after a few hours.

The Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day celebrations scheduled to be held in Istanbul's Beşiktaş district on May 19 have been banned by the Istanbul Governor's Office, Beşiktaş Mayor Murat Hazinedar has said, while Istanbul Governor Vasip Şahin said he did not have any information on the issue. 

Be?ikta? Municipality changes street name to 'peace' in Turkish and Kurdish

Istanbul's Be?ikta? Municipality has change the name of a street in the district to "Bar??-A?iti," meaning "peace" in Turkish and Kurdish. The move comes as an expression of solidarity with the municipality in the violence-hit southeastern province of Hakkari.
