Romania's Halep progresses to Gippsland Trophy singles quarter-finals
Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, world number two, on Wednesday advanced to the singles quarter-finals of the 565,530-USD Gippsland Trophy WTA 500 tennis tournament after defeating German Laura Siegemund 6-2 6-4. Top-seed Halep, 29, prevailed in an hour and 33 minutes. The former world number one started the game strong and led 4-0, finishing the first set 6-2, after 39 minutes.

Romanian-French pair Mihaela Buzarnescu / Alize Cornet qualified on Tuesday for the quarterfinals of the doubles event of the Gippsland Trophy (WTA 500) tennis tournament in Melbourne, with total prizes of 565,530 dollars, by defeating Hayley Carter (USA) / Luisa Stefani (Brazil) 6-3, 6-1. Buzarnescu and Cornet won in only 55 minutes versus the 6th seeds.

Romanians Monica Niculescu, Patricia Tig and Simona Halep won doubles matches at the Gippsland Trophy (WTA 500) tournament in Melbourne on Tuesday, with total prizes of 565,530 dollars. The pair Monica Niculescu / Patricia Tig won 6-3, 6-3 versus 4th seeds Andreja Klepac (Slovenia) / Elise Mertens (Belgium), in just 66 minutes.
Romania's Cirstea through to BNP Paribas Open second qualifying round
Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea defeated US's Danielle Lao 6-3 6-4 in the first qualifying round of the women's singles event at the 9,035,428-USD BNP Paribas Open tournament in Indian Wells (California). The 28-year-old Cirstea, world number 98, prevailed in one hour and 15 minutes over 27-year-old Lao, world number 153.
Australia beat Netherlands to return to World Group
Daria Gavrilova put Australia back into the World Group of the Fed Cup with victory over Quirine Lemoine of the Netherlands in Wollongong on April 22.
Krunic suffers early exit in Rabat
RABAT - Serbia's Aleksandra Krunic has suffered an early exit from the Rabat WTA tournament after losing 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) to Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova in the first round on Tuesday.
Krunic will continue her Rabat campaign with her doubles partner, Daria Gavrilova of Australia.

Australia beat Serbia in Fed Cup clash
ZRENJANIN - The Serbia women's national tennis team has failed to qualify for the Fed Cup World Group II after losing 4-0 to Australia in the play-offs at the weekend.
Daria Gavrilova beat Nina Stojanovic 6-0, 6-3 at Zrenjanin's Crystal Hall on Sunday to win the decisive third point for Australia.

Krunic, Barty to open Serbia vs Australia Fed Cup clash

Jankovic beats Gavrilova in Wuhan, to face Muguruza
WUHAN - Serbia's Jelena Jankovic has got off to a successful start at the WTA tennis tournament in Wuhan, China, after beating Australian Daria Gavrilova 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round.
Jankovic won after 87 minutes of play and is now 2-0 head-to-head against Gavrilova.
