The film has been dismissed outright and its director, Costa-Gavras, until recently hailed as one of Greece's top filmmakers, is suddenly being accused by some of getting carried away. Why?

Paris-based Greek-French filmmaker Costa-Gavras has lashed out against a portion of Greece's media he said has insulted him in "the worst way."

The official government website, Diavgeia, has published a decision by Media Minister Nikos Pappas to grant funding of nearly 630,000 euros to Greek-French filmmaker Costa-Gavras for a project based on a book by Greece's controversial former finance minister.

The Athens Open-Air Film Festival continues on Friday, July 6, with the 1965 French mystery "The Sleeping Car Murders" (Compartiment tueurs), directed by Costa-Gavras from the novel by Sebastien Japrisot, starring Simone Signoret, Michel Piccoli, Yves Montand and Jean-Louis Trintignant. This year's festival program includes 18 classic films, many of which are famous literary adaptations.

The Cannes Film Festival organized the screening of Greek-French director Costa-Gavras, “Z”. The restored version of the work was created in honor of the award-winning director and producer.

Thierry Frémaux, artistic director of the Cannes Film Festival, praised the director’s work for its ability to rip-roar through borders as a carrier of culture messages across Europe.

Thirty years after he was given the Palme D’Or, Costa Gavras returns to the Cannes Film Festival as the honorary member of the Cannes Classics family.
