German airline Lufthansa has canceled 800 flights both passenger and cargo flights on Friday after pilots union 'Vereinigung Cockpit' announced they are going on a planned all-day strike.

Up to 26,000 job cuts are possible at the German aviation giant Lufthansa. The news comes as Lufthansa's shareholders prepare to vote on a €9 billion ($10.3 billion) bailout with conditions such as slot losses at key airports attached.

Lufthansa decided to ground about 700 aircraft or nearly 92% of its 763 aircraft fleet by April 19 due to lower demand triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic according to a statement from the largest German airline.

The company's subsidiaries have ceased their service, ending their flight operations until March 28.

Istanbul's Atatürk Airport has overtaken Frankfurt Airport to enter the top three busiest airports in Europe, Bloomberg has reported, based on 2015 passenger numbers. 

The shift came as Turkish Airlines continued its rapid expansion and strikes at Deutsche Lufthansa AG hurt the German hub.

Norwegian Air Shuttle hopes to start selling one-way tickets to Europe for $69 in 2017 by flying from U.S. airports that have low fees, Chief Executive Officer Bjørn Kjos said in an interview.

Fraport AG said it may take until next year to complete the acquisition of airport assets in Greece as the new government there reviews privatization plans, while adding that earnings will increase in 2015 even without the deal.
