Mehmet Selim Kiraz

Indictment accepted almost four years after death of young Gezi victim Elvan

The Istanbul 17th Court of Serious Crimes has accepted an indictment regarding the death of 14-year-old Berkin Elvan, who was killed with a tear gas canister during the Gezi protests in June 2013.

The indictment was completed on Dec. 7 after nearly three years of investigation, with the prosecutor saying the police officer had displayed "probable intent" in killing the boy.

Slain Turkish prosecutor Kiraz commemorated on first anniversary of killing

Turkish prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz was commemorated on the first anniversary of his death at Istanbul's Ça?layan Courthouse, where he was shot dead after being taken hostage by members of the outlawed far-left group the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C).

Yet another attack on the free press

This week, as usual, lots of crazy things happened in Turkey. The most mind-boggling one for me, however, was an indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office against 18 journalists. They were accused of "making propaganda for a terrorist organization," with the prosecutor asking for up to 7.5 years in prison for each.
