Former F1 champion Michael Schumacher has been discharged from a Swiss hospital and is returning home, where he will continue his recovery after the devastating skiing accident last year.

"Considering the severe injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months," Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said, as quoted by the CNN.

Corinna Schumacher, the wife of Michael Schumacher, has said he is getting better after coming out of a coma, reports The Telegraph. 

Those are her first comments since the former Formula One driver's skiing accident last December.

Speaking at a horse-riding tournament in Germany, Corinna Schumacher said the improvement seen in her husband's condition was encouraging.

Formula One champion Michael Schumacher was transferred from a French hospital to a facility in Switzerland on June 16 after emerging from a coma following his devastating ski accident in December.

Michael Schumacher is "showing small signs of progress" said his agent Sabine Kehm in an interview for the German channel ARB on Sunday evening. 

Kehm issued a statement on April 4 stating that Schumacher was showing "moments of consciousness and awakening", which had been the first news from his family in over a month.

Sabine Kehm, the driver’s spokeswoman, declined to release any further details, saying he would remain at hospital in Grenoble.
