A group of Turkish businesspeople from various sectors have visited senior Thai government officials in Bangkok to learn more about investment opportunities in the country and seek mutual partnerships with Thai companies.

The Thai government extended the temporary visa fees to the country by the end of April 2019. The new deadline applies to tourists from 20 countries, including Bulgaria. 

Turkey and Thailand have commenced negotiations to sign a free trade deal, the economy ministers of both countries announced on July 19. 

Speaking at a press meeting in Ankara along with his Thai counterpart, Apiradi Tantraporn, Turkish Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci said the planned free trade agreement (FTA) would boost bilateral trade by 40 percent. 

A key suspect in the plotting of last month's deadly bombing in Bangkok was last tracked via multiple flights to Turkey, Thai police said on Sept. 14, and Malaysia announced it had made three arrests related to the attack. 

Thailand destroyed more than two tons of ivory on Aug. 26 - a victory for animal rights groups fighting against the trade in a country renowned for being a hub for illegal tusks.

Thailand on Friday closed its embassy and consulate in Turkey after a protest against its deportation of Uighur Muslims to China, as the US warned the minority could face "harsh treatment" on their return.

Turkey has condemned Thailand for forcibly returning to China nearly 100 Uighur migrants who were sheltering in Thailand after escaping alleged Chinese oppression in Xinjiang in the wake of a violent attack against Bangkok's consulate in Istanbul over the deportations.

A pro-Uighur group attacked the Thai Consulate in Istanbul late July 8 over allegations that 200 Uighurs who had fled to the Southeast Asian country from China would be repatriated.

Myanmar brought ashore more than 700 "boat people" it had kept at sea for days aboard a seized vessel, as the United States on June 3 called on the country to help solve a migrant crisis by recognising the rights of its Muslim Rohingya minority. 

Nearly 800 "boat people" were brought ashore in Indonesia on May 15 but other vessels crammed with migrants were sent back to sea despite a U.N. call to quickly rescue thousands set adrift in Southeast Asian waters.
