The government appeared to be preparing for another round of pre-election handouts on Wednesday after the European Commission indicated that Greece had honored most of its bailout-related commitments, paving the way for the release of around 1 billion euros in funding.

Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis told radio station “Sto Kokkino” on Monday that he was still optimistic concerning negotiations despite Sunday’s deadlock.

“Today is a very nice day, we have finally come to the moment of clarity,’ he said. “Yesterday, Greece said enough is enough, and it is now the Europeans’ turn to make decisions.”
