Yiannis Boutaris' funeral will be held in Thessaloniki on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his condolences on Sunday for the passing of Yiannis Boutaris, who died late Saturday at the age of 82.

On Saturday, November 9, Yiannis Boutaris passed away.

The businessman, oenologist, and former mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris, took his last breath tonight at a private clinic in the city, where he had been hospitalized for serious health problems recently.

Yiannis Boutaris, winemaker and mayor, died late Saturday at the age of 82.

His death was announced by Kyr-Yianni, the winemaking business he founded and which is run by his two sons, in a Facebook post, in both English and Greek.

The new mayor of Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis, has quietly started his term without fanfare or grand declarations. So far, he has skillfully avoided the common but misguided approach of dismantling the work of his predecessor - an easy trap for those lacking a clear plan and vision.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Kir-Yianni winery in Imathia, in a short break from his two-day campaigning in northern Greece.

Mitsotakis was informed about the winery's operation by the founder and former Thessaloniki mayor Yiannis Boutaris and his son Stelios, and later attended a lunch for him and his delegation near the vineyards.

After seven postponements, the trial began on Friday over the attack on the former mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris, during the commemoration of the Genocide of the Pontians in May 2018 in White Tower Square.

Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris said on Friday that municipal officers will begin enforcing Greece's largely flouted smoking ban in all enclosed public spaces after the Easter holidays.
Speaking to journalists, Boutaris said smoking has continued in enclosed public spaces despite the ban.
"We are the only country where laws are not enforced," he said at a press briefing.
