Deniau:Election results give mandate,obligation to new gov't

BELGRADE - French Ambassador to Serbia Francois-Xavier Deniau said on Thursday that the results of the recent parliamentary elections in Serbia showed that the Serbian people is strongly committed to further EU path and implementation of reforms, which firmly binds a new government to act in that direction.

The elections, as we in France see them, represent a strong confirmation of the Serbian people's willingness to continue along the EU path and conduct necessary reforms, Deniau told Tanjug.

The government that is about to be formed will not only have the mandate, but also strong obligation to act in line with that, Deniau said

The ambassador noted that the Sunday parliamentary elections passed off well, and that the elections results do not leave room for any doubt, pointing to the positive comment by the international community and EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele.

As Commissioner Fuele noted, there are improvements in terms of the media reporting, which is the topic that the authorities should consider, and I think they are already doing that as two out of the three draft laws on the media are already under consideration at the European Commission in Brussels, and I want to see in that a sign of good will to ensure greater independence and transparency of the media in this country, he said.

Deniau noted that the climate has changed in Serbia, adding that with the opening of EU entry talks, Serbia entered a new important phase of its history and that now things could be considered "as what happened before and after".
